when the term ‘transformation’ is not an exaggeration……

Our fantastic Project Managers, goulden and sons are nearing completion of a barn conversion in Moretonhampstead. We thought it newsworthy to champion those who were instrumental in its restoration.

When we first saw and entered the barn, back in 2016, we had to shoo-out a couple of resident sheep and tread carefully around the layers of ‘floor matter’. It looked precarious, to say the least, with structural members leaning in all directions and water pouring through the moss covered stone walls.

Of course the easy thing would have been to knock it down and start again. It would have been cheaper and significantly quicker, however the barn retained a certain presence and charm that would never be re-captured in a new build.

Paul Carpenter, of PCA Consulting, the historic buildings guru was called in to assess the existing structure’s stability and suitability for domestic conversion. Miraculously he felt it was sufficient and so was retained with little interference or enhancement. Ian Phillips of VES prepared a sympathetic architectural design and Chris Goulden painstakingly refurbished the barn into what is now a delightfully warm, light and dry environment.

This is by no means an architectural masterpiece, but it does go to show what can be achieved with the right level of care, respect and dedication to a knackered old shed !
