van Ellen + Sheryn featured on front cover of Grand Designs Magazine… September 2018

Bottor Cottage is a stunning Georgian property located in 4 acres of woodland in south Dartmoor that has been extensively re-modelled and extended by van Ellen + Sheryn Architects. The cottage was purchased at auction in 2012 and the client brief was to breathe new life into the site, creating spacious and contemporary living spaces.

A fundamental design decision was made early on to remove a series of poorly conceived extensions allowing the well proportioned cottage ‘to breathe’. Mimicking the scale of the existing house with a new lightweight extension to the rear, the timber clad structure is connected with an elegant glazed link. The formal rooms of the cottage have been restored and the roof timbers exposed, whilst the new extension provides modern, open plan accommodation.

The material palette of Siberian larch, standing seam pressed metal and high performance glazing ensures the project performs both thermally and aesthetically. The client’s excellent sense of style has added character and variety to each of the internal spaces.

This ambitious, 5 bedroom project received the full support of the Dartmoor National Park during planning and was completed in 2017.
