New build house in Ashburton is starting to take shape

This new build, replacement dwelling  sits within a wonderful plot on the edge of Ashburton. The existing dormer bungalow was a poorly constructed house with a number of ill-conceived extensions. Having exhausted options to remodel or extend, our clients decided to bite the bullet and knock down the house and replace with a new  a dwelling.

Existing

Due to the semi- rural location of the plot we decided to pursue a simplistic, barn-like structure. The house comprises two single-storey, vaulted barns with a flat roofed ‘link building’, which defines the entrance into the house. This design is a response to the client’s desire to build the house in two phases.

The first barn to the right provides a kitchen / dining space in the heart of the volume with a sunken living area in front of a wall of glass. A guest suite and utility sit behind. The second barn provides accommodation for three double bedrooms, family bathroom and laundry room.

The shell of the first barn is almost complete; constructed from SIPS panels with an expressed internal steel frame. The apex of each barn has a gentle curved profile. The roof will be clad in a dark grey zinc, walls will be a combination of natural stone, vertical zinc and larch cladding.
